Gioia’s Rec:
There are numerous fics written in which Harry is rescued from an abusive home with the Dursleys. What sets this one apart is that it’s not an emo-driven angst-fest. Instead of gratuitous poor!Harry moments in which a trembling, teary-eyed, saintly Harry is forced to endure horrific abuse, the fic has a no-nonsense approach to Harry’s home life. The author sticks strictly with the facts as presented by JKR without any embellishment which would be unnecessary for the purpose of this fic. In addition, the canon side characters are all presented very much in character; that is to say, all their flaws are very apparent, which makes the story all the more likeable for me.

The story is told entirely through the POV of a muggle babysitter who adopts Harry under completely plausible circumstances, another factor which sets this fic apart and which clinched my interest in the story. Because the story only covers a short time period, it doesn’t resolve every problem in the entire book series. The story remains focused and concise in its narrative, which I love. The protagonist is very aware that she’s taken on a huge responsibility in a world she doesn’t entirely understand, so the story deals primarily with those hurdles she faces in the immediate aftermath of Harry’s adoption.

My only regret regarding this story is that it lacks a sequel.
