Gioia’s Rec:
This fic is the sequel to “The Guiltless,” a novella-length story in which Snape discovers that the Dursleys have been abusing Harry.  That premise is one I’ve seen handled numerous times.  What I enjoyed more was this sequel which then approaches HBP with Snape and Harry on the verge of an understanding, almost a friendship, as a result of Snape’s previous actions.  I enjoy fics that throw what-if scenarios at canon.  This fic does it in a very interesting way.  Things are twisted slightly, with HBP events not really beginning until part-way into the school year.  But once they do, it becomes very interesting to see how this relationship between Snape and Harry develops, as well as what it does and doesn’t alter about the war that is to come.  There are a few stylistic choices the writer makes which aren’t quite my cup of tea, but the characters were captivating enough and the plot intriguing enough that my attention was riveted to the story regardless.

There are no ships until the epilogue, and then they are mostly mentioned in passing, so I’m marking this as a gen fic. And although the fic is primarily a Half-Blood Prince-AU, it also incorporates much of the Deathly Hallows canon.
