Content Rating: Teen
Status: Completed
Length: Novella
Story Summary: It’s still the same old story when Lucius Malfoy, fresh out of Azkaban, arrives looking for an old friend. Written as a gift for Lady Rhian for the 2008 SSHG Gift Exchange, using a prompt in which all the fundamental things apply.

Gioia’s Rec:
Inspired by my favorite movie, Casablanca, this fic follows many, if not all, of the main points in the film with Snape filling in for Bogart’s Rick, Hermione as Ilsa.  Lucius Malfoy’s role is beautifully ambiguous and it’s not till the end of the fic that we clearly see whether he fits one of the movie characterizations.  The inclusion of Neville as Victor Lazlo was a surprise to me, but I found EliseWanderer did a fantastic job of writing him as a strong, often-underestimated man, deserving of Hermione in his own right, even as he competes with Snape for her affection.

The tale is richly descriptive, with an exotic location described so vividly that the muggle reality of Petra is beautifully integrated with a wizarding world living just beneath the surface.  Well-written characterizations and a complicated love triangle form the foundation of the plot, but it’s the imaginative magics and suspenseful plot which really sold me on this fic.  It becomes obvious early on that simply knowing the cinematic tale of love and sacrifice didn’t mean I could predict the outcome of this particular story.
