Summary: Future Fic. Max and Liz have been separated for 10 years. What will happen when they finally meet again?
Cookie’s story made San Francisco so tangible to me, that I felt as if I knew its beautiful streets and foggy bay years before I first visited California. The author has an amazing gift, also present in her Harry Potter and Doctor Who fanfics, of making her world so real and immersing the reader so deeply into her characters’ minds that you’ll easily live out the story through their eyes.
The premise of the story takes off from Season 1, which relieves us of the worst of the show’s absurdly contrived angst. Cookie’s fic therefore features a Liz who is happy in her skin and who has gone on to create a life for herself during Max’s absence. She hasn’t forgotten him or quit loving him, but neither has she sat and wallowed in grief and wasted her talent. The fact that she’s in such a healthy place emotionally means that when Max does return for her in this fic, we don’t spend chapter after chapter immersed in overwhelming emotions and tears and babbling about being soulmates. That gets old. This is believable, frank, and true to the season one characterizations fans of the show first fell in love with.
But in the end, this is one of my favorite reunion fics not only for the beautiful environment and natural-feeling characterizations, but because the author writes a story that extends beyond the reunion of Max and Liz, years after his AU-departure to Antar. Without spoiling the story it’s difficult to elaborate too much. But suffice it to say this story will keep you deeply engrossed from start to finish.
