Story Summary: Voldemort is gone, and in the aftermath of the final battle, Hogwarts Castle is nearly empty. Why is Hermione still there? (2003 WIKTT Valentine’s Day Challenge Response) SS/HG

Gioia’s Rec:
This is a favored fic in the SS/HG fandom, though there’s far more of a gen-fic to this than any actual romance or shippiness.  The story tells of Hermione and her determined refusal to leave Hogwarts after the battle.  She just remains, working to restore the castle, even when others have all moved on with their lives.

The fic goes AU after OotP, so don’t assume it has anything to do with the post-Deathly Hallows world. Even so, it captures marvelously that sense of shock and inability to move on that is easy to imagine for those who survived the final battle.  After so many years of simply putting one foot in front of another, forcing oneself to do what needs to be done, how does one let go of that? I liked how it is – oddly enough – Snape who continues to urge Hermione to move on; to let the past go. I had a conversation recently with a friend who commented upon Snape’s inability to let go of his wrath and forgive.  The Snape in this fic is a broken enough man that it’s not hard to imagine him finally releasing that burden and, as a result, urging the pesky Gryffindor lurking about the castle to do the same.
