Gioia’s Rec:
This delightful Harry Potter spin on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol features Petunia Dursley in the role of Scrooge. With Lily Evans Potter, Severus Snape, and James Potter serving as the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future respectively, the story takes an interesting and far-reaching tone from the beginning. In Deathly Hallows we saw that Petunia never relented in her stubbornly abusive treatment of Harry, nor did she seem to ever fully understand what Dumbledore had alluded to in Half-Blood Prince when he referenced the damage that had been done to Dudley Dursley. Melindaleo takes us back to that issue and gives Petunia one more chance to undo the damage she has done to her own son. Nothing is certain, as free-will is very obviously present in this tale for all concerned, including the three ghosts. In the end what could’ve been a very trite, cliché fic turns out to have more depth and substance than you would expect from the often-imitated Dickens, thanks to Melindaleo’s gift of well-written dialogue, imaginative plotting, and a firm grasp on her characters’ unique personalities.
