Story Summary: A HBP Missing Moment. Harry’s thoughts after that traumatic night while he’s lying in his bed and realizes that he can no longer hear Fawkes singing. Harry is truly alone…or is he?
The Missing Moments series consists of three short stories, all of which are outstanding. The three fics are posted as a whole on SIYE, but posted separately on other sites, such as ff.net.
“His Best Source of Comfort” features Harry lying in bed the night that Dumbledore died, feeling alone and empty as he realizes that Fawkes has quit singing. He listens to the dialogue of roommates while faking sleep, until he can stand it no longer and heads for the common room where he finds Ginny. The author is known for her fluff, but she does a remarkable job here of conveying the conflicting, despairing grief Harry is experiencing, and how it is that Ginny truly is his best source of comfort.
Working in reverse chronological order, Melindaleo’s next segment is “Treacle Tart, Broomsticks, and Ginny.” Harry is notoriously inept at social skills, so I often found myself wondering what happened between him and Ginny after they fled the common room following that infamous kiss. I love how Harry’s awkward, worried nature is portrayed so well in this POV piece. His fear of rejection, her fear of rejection – it’s all addressed here. The brevity of these chapters is just proof that good writing doesn’t require endless blather. A truly great writer can convey a great deal in few words.
And finally, “Moment of Clarity,” features Ginny’s POV as she visits Ron in the Hospital Wing following the disastrous Quidditch match that put Harry in a nearby bed. Ginny’s POV is done just as well as Harry’s, with fantastic insight into what was going on in her mind during those final days that she was still with Dean.
