Story Summary: A one-shot speculating on what it would REALLY be like if the Dursleys tried to abuse Harry. Takes place summer after fifth year.

“Defensive Magic” and the companion piece “Offensive Magic” are a perfect response to the many Abused!Harry fics. JKR has hinted that Harry was abused, but has never elaborated on it. Fanon has taken that to some pretty extreme lengths in fanfics, many of which I think cross the line into the offensive.
These two one-parters, though, are fantastic think-pieces on the question of whether or not Harry is abused. They don’t minimize the risk; they don’t pretend the signs aren’t there. What they do is point out some limits to this scenario. And the inclusion of Snape as the witness to it all is done in a brilliant, logical and completely un-sappy fashion.
