True Confessions is a unique story for many reasons, not the least of which is that I laughed throughout the story, up until the very last, beautiful, poignant line, which prompted me to cry. So don’t be deceived by the light-hearted nature of the story – there’s a lot of depth here beneath the surface. It’s the solid characterizations and well-depicted family life that makes the entire premise so believable and that much more fun.
The story, which is AU since HBP, features a glimpse at what family life might have been like for the children of Remus and Tonks. The protagonist, Callie, is both empathetic and gifted (how could she not be, with those two for parents?), and she manages to get herself into some hilarious hijinks worthy of her Marauder heritage. In fact, it should come as no surprise that After the Rain is known for writing brilliant Marauder-era fics. She knows how to write dry wit and heart-wrenching grief, side-splitting slapstick and suspenseful action, all with so much depth of feeling behind them that one feels as if they are living out those emotions right along with the story’s characters. In fact, come to think of it, everything I’ve ever read by this author deserves a rec, as she is a truly gifted author.
