This 10+-year-old fic was a treat I’m delighted to have stumbled upon, in which our favorite protagonists must “overcome witches and wizards and curses and quests and sorcerers and dragons to win [their] hearts’ desires.” Liz M plucks our favorite Pride & Prejudice characters out of canon and drops them seamlessly into fairy tales derived from the original folklore (as opposed to any Disney-esque versions). There is very little of the original P&P here aside from the basic characterizations. Mr. Bennet is a humble woodcutter, Mrs. Bennet is ever the flibbertigibbet, and their 5 daughters are much as they appeared in canon, and very aptly named as proof: Serenity, Beauty, Solemnity, Echo and Caprice. The five daughters must each face their own personal quest in order to achieve happiness. As with canon, the two eldest and the last daughter have the most dramatic adventures, facing characters recognizable from sources such as Mother Goose and the Brothers Grimm. I was surprised by how like their canon counterparts the protagonists all remained in spite of the very unique setting. The story kept me at the edge of my seat, never knowing when the author was going to stay true to the fairy tales, when she was going to deviate from the traditional resolutions, and when she was going to create her own fairy tale that felt so authentic I’m still not sure what was an invention of her own mind.
My only critique: There were one or two sections in the beginning which moved a bit slow.
