Story Summary: On a drab Tuesday morning, a much older Hermione finds herself accosted by a man who has been dead for years and a Draco who hasn’t aged past seventeen…
In spite of working on staff over at Know-It-Alls with silburygirl, I somehow managed to miss this fantastic story which she had written several years ago and which is rec’ed at KIA.
I have a fondness for re-do/time-turner fics, in spite of knowing how utterly illogical they are. There are long essays which others have written on why such a premise isn’t pragmatic, so I won’t bother regurgitating any of that information here, especially as I have long since decided to ignore such things as logic or reason when it comes to forming some of my interests. However in the case of this fic, I was amazed at how the author took this often hokey premise and made something logical, reasonable, and completely entrancing out of it.
Hermione, in particular, really stands out because of the utterly ordinary life she has. One thing that was really telling in that regard was a fight she has with someone at work. It isn’t so much what she says in the fight (although that was particularly telling and extremely amusing!); it was her co-worker’s response: he “was used to a vague, disconnected version of Hermione.” Vague? Disconnected? How on earth has our canon Hermione become that way? I love how thoroughly Hermione’s character is examined in such a short piece, so that it’s possible to envision Hermione finding herself at that place in life.
But the kicker thing about this story is that there’s far more going on than just that. That was just the tip of the iceberg. Go read the story – it’s dramatic, adventurous, exciting, and completely, realistically, and logically character-driven in spite of (or perhaps because of) its time-turner premise. Try and top that.
