Because it’s my blog and I can do what I want, I’m reviewing this entire series at once. 🙂 “Fox Ears” initially caught my eye because of course I’m going to be interested in any story that figures out how to re-Fred the Weasley family. I mean, honestly. As if it’s possible to imagine George without Fred. The story turned out to be far more than a fun, somewhat crack-ish fix-it, though. In fact, the method used to re-Fred Fred isn’t new – I’ve seen it used elsewhere, too. What’s unique and brilliant about this fic is everything that comes before and after the rescue.
The author explores the emotional aspects far more than any other fic I’ve seen address this. The first fic is from Charlie’s POV, and watching him deal with a heart-broken, utterly shattered George was simply amazing. Charlie was the least-seen Weasley brother in the book (and movie) series. And yet, The Starhorse writes Charlie so perfectly that he fits right in to the Weasley family, with his own specific niche carved out, and his own specific role to fill. I loved getting to know him and seeing how much he loved his baby brothers. When you finish this first fic, make sure you check out the illustration of one of the closing scenes HERE, as drawn by olafpriol.
In the second fic, “The Worthy King,” Bill and Fred have to rescue Charlie and George from the legal fall-out of Fred’s rescue. Again, it’s the relationship between the brothers that really sells this story. It’s remarkable to me how unique each young man is, and how each of them has a very particular role to play in their family dynamic. Of course, with the Weasleys at the helm, this can’t help but be an exciting fic, too!
Finally, in “That Summer” we see Fred and George go visit their shop for the first time since the war ended. The utter ruins in which they find it serves as the setting for their long-overdue conversation about how they’re going to pick up the pieces from their lives and continue onward after recovering from the shock of Fred’s experience at the Battle of Hogwarts. I particularly love George’s remarks about what it would’ve been like for him to face re-opening the shop without Fred.
This story isn’t an angst fest by any stretch of the imagination. I bawled happy tears in multiple spots. And the second fic has some moments of schadenfreude that were truly delicious. But it’s the bond between these brothers that really makes this story so brilliant, even above the exciting, dramatic and hilarious moments. Now if only canon followed this storyline!
