Gioia’s Rec:

I can’t believe I never wrote a rec for this, one of my top, utmost favs for The Martian fandom!

Today I’m in the midst of my 5th or 6th re-read of this fic, because I’m simultaneously re-reading the book this week, too. I have to read them together because this fic is my head canon for Mindy’s POV during the book. Thus I’m having fun switching back and forth between the book & fic.

Even after so many read-throughs, there are still so many little inclusions here that I’ve missed during earlier readings. For example, I just LOLd loudly over this fic’s often-hilarious hashtags… which can also be poignant or painful. Those funny little things, and the not-so-funny moments of fear, grief, anxiety, or even just glimpses of Mindy’s social awkwardness, really flesh out this story and make it so real to me. And Mindy’s interactions with the outside world, inc. emails texts, Twitter feed, and trending hashtags, are a great way to show us snippets of what the book and movie couldn’t.

(This story rec is part of my AO3 Bookmarks series. I.e., this is an abbreviated rec because it is taken from my AO3 bookmarks rather than having been properly written in full.)

About Gioia

I'm a wife and mother and, when not tied up with responsibilities, I read non-stop. I love to share my favorite stories with others, thus the existence of my blog.
